The UEFA Champions League semi-final between Arsenal and Atlético Madrid head to the Emirates Stadium on a knife edge, with both sides still chasing its first biggest European crown and a place in the final.
The first leg at the Metropolitano Stadium delivered a tense, evenly balanced contest.
Viktor Gyökeres gave Arsenal the lead from the penalty spot before Julián Alvarez responded—also from the spot—before the break and added a second after halftime.
Atlético grew into the game as it wore on, underlining their attacking strength in what has become their most prolific Champions League campaign, with a club-record 35 goals, including ten from Alvarez.
Momentum may have swung toward the Spanish side late in Madrid, but Arsenal’s European form this season remains exceptional.
Mikel Arteta’s team are the only unbeaten side left in the competition (W10 D3), boasting the meanest defence with eight clean sheets and just six goals conceded.
Still, Atlético’s consistency in front of goal poses a major threat, having scored in 37 consecutive UEFA matches.
Arsenal can also draw confidence from their earlier 4-0 win over Atlético on home soil in the league phase—when Gyökeres struck twice—while Atlético’s recent record against English opposition offers less encouragement, with just two wins in their last 13 UEFA meetings (D3 L8).
However, Diego Simeone’s side edged their last two-legged encounter, winning 2-1 in the 2017/18 Europa League semi-finals.
Both camps are framing the second leg as a defining moment, with home advantage a central theme in Arsenal’s belief.
Mikel Arteta said: “We are in an incredible position – the semi-final of the Champions League. We have to play in front of our people – it’s in our hands.”
Viktor Gyökeres added: “We know when we play at home, with our fans, it’s going to be different, for sure. We just have to do our job, be at our best, and it’s going to be a good game at home.”
Atlético, however, are leaning on their intensity and attacking belief after a strong second-half showing in the first leg.
